GOAL!!!
Don’t
worry, the Blogg remains a football-free haven. We just needed to capture
the attention of the three of you who are still glued to World Cup coverage
in preference to Team Hesco…we’ve some important news to share.
Those of who you have been receiving the Blogg from the start will be
familiar with the four objectives we set ourselves before embarking on
the Atlantic Rowing Race. Some of the more recent ‘Joe’s Club’
members won’t have seen them…so let me remind you:
1) To complete the 3,118 nautical mile crossing of the North Atlantic
Ocean, by oar power alone, unsupported;
2) To set a new record for the time taken to row the Atlantic, unbroken
for 110 years at 55 days;
3) To become the first crew to row unsupported from the US mainland to
the UK mainland; and
4) To raise at least £100,000 for the Meningitis Trust.
Now
it is with great pleasure – and of course the appropriate drum-roll
– that we can announce the achievement of Objective Four. We've
yet to receive confirmation of the final amount, but we can report that
the funds raised to date are now in excess of £100,000!
Once again, I’d like to thank all of you who are supporting Team
Hesco and Commando Joe, for without your assistance, backup, generosity
and sheer collective willpower, we wouldn’t be where we are today.
In
particular, we’d like to mention J&E Shepherd, the race sponsors
who have adopted the Meningitis Trust as their charity. On Thursday night,
at a Meningitis Trust benefit dinner held by Shepherd’s in Edinburgh,
a live link-up with the Mount Spirit boys was arranged. Whatever they
said during their call to the guests, it obviously worked; the dinner
raised £60,000!
With
Objective Four completed, let's ensure the boys have all the support and
encouragement you can throw at them to help them achieve the remaining
three.
The
latest from Mount Spirit
Team HQ is now back in New York, where we spoke to Charlie this morning
(Saturday). All members of the crew are in good spirits, as those of you
who have been following the daily progress reports will know. We also

A tough
night last night riding out a Force 8/9 gale. We and our trusty
boat, Mount Spirit came through and we're now cracking on again.
We had a visit from a US Coastguard vessel earlier asking if we
were "the little orange dinghy off their port bow and do
we need assistance...?"
Our frog
is named DILLIGAF until further notice. Some of you will know
what it means, some won't. The fact is DILLIGAF sits on the boat,
smiling in all conditions!!!”
