The following nine weeks spent at the Commando Training Centre in Lympstone, East Devon, include a series of assault courses, survival training and physical endurance tests. The course concludes with a 30-mile march across Dartmoor - the 'yomp' - wearing a full 30lb pack, which must be completed in eight hours.

Up to sixty days of almost continuous physical exertion will take its toll on the competitors in the Shepherds Ocean Fours Rowing Race. Commando Joe's common bond will give these four particular competitors a valuable edge. They are fit; used to resolving problems; well-versed in working under pressure, and able to survive - and perform as a team - under extremely harsh conditions. To Army personnel who have served in campaigns such as the Falklands, Bosnia, Kosovo, Northern Ireland, the Gulf and Iraq, such qualities are second-nature.

Training and Preparation
Unlike yachting races, where amateur teams are usually directed by a qualified skipper, once Commando Joe crosses the starting line in New York they will be on their own. Adequate and suitable training is a vital prerequisite.

Commando Joe has been provided with the information necessary to begin training for an endurance race of this kind and a programme is being drawn up for the team to follow.

The boat itself will be equipped with the latest technology in navigation systems, communications and safety devices, including an Inmarsat D+ tracking system. However, the boat won't be without a sextant!
